What inspires you?
Weddings! I know, I know—token answer, but it’s true. I have always loved weddings, in fact I used to cut photos out of magazines and make wedding scrapbooks, and this was when I was like ten years old. I love that each wedding is unique to the couple and whether it is simple, elegant, extravagant, intimate or big time they are all beautiful.

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.
Yes! I have a three-year-old puggle named Bailey. I treat her more like a human-baby than a dog, but when you’re that cute you deserve to get spoiled. She’s known around the office as “Schoob.”

What’s your favorite vacation spot?
I am in love with New York City. I love all of the history, all of the energy, the amazing restaurants. I love that you can walk two blocks and be in a completely different neighborhood with its own unique charm. I love that every time you visit you could go all new places. I truly love everything about it, even that stinky sewer smell.

What is your most cherished possession?
My wedding band. The ring was actually my grandmothers and she gave it to me for my twenty-first birthday. After my husband proposed he had it restored and added stones to it. I love looking at my left-hand and being reminded of my grandparents and their amazing relationship and now my husband and our marriage.

What has been your favorite wedding and why?
I would be lying if I didn’t say my own. I was just married on November 5, 2011 and the day truthfully could not have gone any better. It was everything I had always dreamed of and more. So cheesy, but I mean it.

What is your motto or favorite quote to live by?
My favorite quote is from Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” I’m a dreamer and I like to think that dreaming has got me to a pretty good place and will continue to. However, my personal motto is “When life is down and brings the blues, shop for shop for shop for shoes.”

What are your hobbies, outside of your business?
I am a die-hard Golden Gopher football fan. I have had season tickets for the past 9 years and have been to three away games and a bowl game! My closet consists mostly of maroon and gold and my fiancé even proposed on the fifty-yard-line of TCF Bank Stadium.

Interview with Alexis Harsh

Do you have any kids?

I have boy/girl twins, Wyatt and Evelyn, who are almost 3 years old.  Wyatt is my reserved and very caring spirited little man. Evelyn is sassy, likes to try and get her brother in trouble and gives the best hugs. They are the center of my universe and keep me grounded, always striving to better myself for them.

What is your most cherished possession?
I have an accordion folder hidden away in my closet. It is stuffed full of letters, scraps of paper and cards which my husband and I began giving each other starting when I was 12 years old.  Every so often I pull it down and read through remembering just how far we’ve come.

What has been your favorite wedding and why?
This is a tough one and I’m not sure in my long career I can pin point just one wedding. I often work with brides from the beginning of their engagement to the day before her wedding. We laugh, we talk for hours, we brainstorm, we get excited. It’s these women, sharing their thoughts and excitement at my table and becoming friends that I remember fondly. They know who they are…

If you could describe yourself in 2 words, what would they be?
Giving, Resilient

What is your favorite childhood memory?
My dad came home from work one day with a box of Junior Mints. He asked me to go on a walk with him. It was just me and him, sharing a box of Junior Mints, talking and sharing our day. It became a recurring event.

How did you get your start in the business?
I began my event career in Arizona, as an operations manager for corporate events. I moved home and fell in love with Watermark. After working at Watermark for just under a year, I took the reins as owner back in 2004 and haven’t looked back. My event experience has given me a design perspective which I share with my brides to create an overall theme and landscape. It’s not just about the invitation and response cards; it’s about all the little details that create and shape the flow of the event. Paper is a passion and once you get wrapped up in it, it carries you away with the possibilities. I’m one of those people who can honestly say, “I love my job”.

TATE STATIONERY
TCBA Member Expert Category: Invitations & Accessories / Invitations & Programs
Interview with Jean Tate

Do you have any kids?  Tell us about them.
My son, “Buddy” is ten and my daughter, “Boo” is six.  Buddy is an exact replica of my husband with a calm, compassionate, and inquisitive personality.  Boo gets her spunk from me although I don’t remember my spunk being nearly this crazy!

What is your favorite childhood memory?
Making Christmas cards with my mom for her list of family and friends.  This is what ultimate drove me to start my own stationery business.

What’s your favorite vacation spot?
My parents bought a cabin when I was eight and it has been my favorite place in the world ever since.  I am thankful my kids enjoy it as much as I do.

What is your most cherished possession?
Can people possess their own kids?  If yes, then my kids.  My children have complete contrasting personalities that keep my husband and I entertained and challenged quite often.

What is your motto or favorite quote to live by?
I have a few:
“If you haven’t found something strange during the day, it hasn’t been much of a day.” – J.A. Wheeler
“You don’t scare me, I have children.”
“Plan to be better tomorrow than today but don’t plan on being finished.” – Carol Ann Tomlinson

What are your hobbies, outside of your business?
I have many gardens in my yard and love the flowers – daisies, zinnia, and my new hydrangea.  I also love to read anything I can get my hands on.  My fave author is Harlan Coben.

Are you involved with Charity work?  Tell us about it.
Our son Buddy was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at age four.  After six intense years of therapies and research, we are now celebrating the huge accomplishments he’s had in his life already.  I devoted much of my time to autism awareness groups and fundraisers in the early years of his diagnosis and raised thousands of dollars in his honor.

What is your favorite color?
Orange.  I even have an orange wall in our house.  Orange should be your fave, too.
