Interview with Crystal Bakker


How did you get your start in the business?
Our family bought our resort in 2004.  At that time I was attending University of Minnesota Duluth, for elementary education.  After graduating and spending a few years teaching in North Minneapolis I decided to join the family business as the Promotional Director.  The resort has been a huge passion for our entire family ever since we purchased it and are all still very involved.  My parents are the owners and my siblings and husband are all very involved with the continued growth and development as well!

Do you have any pets?  Tell us about them.
Yes!  My husband and I got our first puppy in May 2011.  Our golden retriever named Okefenokee (Okee for short) has been a true blessing.  She is very playful and consistently brightens our day!

Who is your favorite sports team?
Hands down, the Minnesota Twins.

What’s your favorite vacation spot?
Appeldoorn’s Sunset Bay Resort… of course!  I also really enjoy visiting my parents in Cape Coral, Florida every year.

What is your motto or favorite quote to live by?
“Those who say only sunshine brings happiness have never danced in the rain.”

What has been your favorite wedding and why?
My own!  We decided to plan a day full of fun, family and friends.  We did everything from renting out a bowling alley for our rehearsal dinner to having a surprise choreographed dance break out halfway through our first song.  Our photo booth and late night pizzas really helped us personalize our special day.  I hope to be able to bring this feeling to all of our brides at Appeldoorn’s and ensuring that they also feel their wedding is as unique and enjoyable as possible!
